The Department of Physics has recently received three generous non-endowed gifts from John J. Matese (our own Professor Emeritus), Jim Miller (son of the former Physics faculty member, Eddie Miller; Jim was a UL Lafayette math/physics major in the early 1960's), and Anthony Simon. We are thankful for their support and opportunities made available for our faculty and students to advance their learning, teaching, research, and service to the community.

One of our benefactors, Jim Miller, shared a story of his first experience with physics and the department: "Your note triggered a memory of the first thing I ever learned in a physics lab. Dad (Eddie Miller) had brought me along as he was setting up a lab and I found a drawer full of meter sticks. They were heavier and longer than anything similar to that that I had seen before and I blurted out 'They (college students) must really be bad.' Dad explained that rulers, yardsticks, etc. could, in addition to discipline, be used to measure length."

(===While we are no longer using the meter sticks to enforce/encourage learning anymore, they are still utilized for introducing the International System of Units in our introductory physics classes.===)
