April 20, 2020 marks the 10th year since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded 41 miles off the Louisiana coast, killing 11 people and spilling about 210 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Much of what we know about the environmental impact of this industrial disaster comes from $500 million funding awarded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative to multidisciplinary research teams across the country. Since 2015 Physics professor, Natalia Sidorovskaia, has been leading Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center - Gulf Ecological Modeling and Monitoring (LADC-GEMM) consortium to study the impact of the spill on the deep diving marine mammal populations in the Gulf of Mexico. This recent news article, including an interview with Dr. Sidorovskaia, highlights many of the research results and discusses how the findings will shape future research in the Gulf of Mexico:
