In early 2019, a team from 5th Gait Technologies, Incorporated in Huntsville, Alabama and the UL Lafayette Department of Physics was awarded a Phase One STTR project entitled Advanced Models and New Impulse Sources for the Transport and Radiation Response Analysis Toolkit. Dr. Andy Hollerman from the Department of Physics was awarded $41,555 from DoD to be part of this research. Dr. Hollerman hired one physics graduate student and one engineering undergraduate student to assist in this effort.
For thirty years, Dr. Hollerman and the overall 5th Gait Technologies program manager, Dr. Jonathan H. Fisher, have collaborated on many contracts and proposals for a variety of agencies. In fact, the entire basis for Dr. Hollerman’s current fluorescence materials research program was started with Dr. Fisher in a contract with the U.S. Army in 1990. The attached picture shows three candidate samples of europium tetrakis dibenzoylmethide triethylammonium (EuD4TEA) when illuminated with ultraviolet light. These samples are being developed for use in the upcoming UL Lafayette CAPE 3 satellite, which will launch later this year. During these collaborations, Drs. Hollerman and Fisher were heavily involved in the analysis of the survivability and operability of optical components in extreme space environments. Specifically, this work includes efforts to calculate the effects of incident radiation fluence on an assortment of optical components, such as sensor mirrors and windows. The UL Lafayette and 5th Gait Technologies team is planning on writing a Phase Two STTR proposal to continue this work in the early fall of 2019.
