The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Department of Physics invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions. The successful candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in physics, to supervise graduate and undergraduate student research projects, to lead vigorous, externally funded research program in an area relevant to the current research pursued by the department, and to demonstrate institutional citizenship through active engagement at the department, college, university, community, and professional levels.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) degree in physics or closely related field, postdoctoral experience, significant research record, a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, and good presentation and interpersonal skills. We are seeking candidates who can strengthen the current research directions existing in the department, which are critical for the state’s economy. These research areas include acoustics, computational physics, geophysics, environmental physics, physics of conventional and unconventional energy sources, physics of Earth systems, physics of materials and micro-fabrication. We seek individuals who are interested in working in dynamic interdisciplinary academic and research environment and who have a strong potential to produce cross-discipline collaborations within the department and College of Sciences. The preference will be given to candidates who can utilize or expand on existing departmental and university research facilities, including the environmental nuclear physics lab, Louisiana Accelerator Center, ultrasound lab, microscopy center, and LONI.

The Department of Physics consists of nine full-time faculty members and about 50 graduate and undergraduate students. Our mission is “the advancement of Physics through excellence in research and the extension of scientific heritage through education.” Over the years the department has created and nurtured a unique blend of applied and fundamental research to improve our understanding of the world around us and to respond to the needs of our community (http://physics.louisiana.edu). We offer both Bachelor’s of Science (BS) and Master’s of Science (MS) degrees in Physics. The Department of Physics is aiming to expand its degree offerings to include an interdisciplinary doctorate degree in Earth and Energy Sciences.
