The new Quantum Design cryogenic DynaCool instrument was installed last week in the Department of Physics. The equipment funding comes from the National Science Foundation through a Major Research Instrumentation grant awarded to Dr. Gabriela Petculescu from the Department of Physics and other collaborators from Physics, Geosciences, and Engineering. The instrument is capable of measuring magnetic, elastic, electric, and thermal properties under well-controlled conditions and will be used for fundamental studies, new-materials design, natural and man-made materials characterization, and energy-harvesting materials development. The picture shows Juan Bahena from Quantum Design and Dr. Petculescu after installation of the new instrument.
