Michalis Charilaou Publishes Paper on Detecting Biogenic Nanomagnetism in Lake Sediments
Wed, 06/17/2020 - 4:56pmThe authors used spectroscopic methods and modeling to detect nanomagnetic biogenic signals in the sediments of Lake Constance, Germany. These signals stem from fossils of magnetotactic bacteria, and there is a strong correlation between the presence of bio-magnetism and redox conditions. This study sheds light on past microbiological activity in response to redox-changes in a depositional environment, and magnetofossils have great potential to constrain time-resolved microbiological response to redox-changes in geological systems.
